Two former Houston policemen were convicted of negligent homicide, and the jury Wild Basin receives gift of 40 acres Forty acres of land in the Lake Austin watershed have been donated as an addition to the Wild Basin Wilderness Park, a park panel board member said Tuesday. Wild Basin organizer Janet Poage told Travis County commissioners that the acquisition was negotiated this month with the owners, who live in Houston. "The 40 acres being donated is prime development land," Poage said. She said the committee wants to list the value of the land as part of the 50 percent local funds needed to obtain a federal matching grant for the park.
Because of the anticipated high value of the donated land, Poage said, the committee expects to buy an additional 60 acres for the park. Although the appraisal and application were not complete, commissioners voted to apply to the federal Bureau of Recreation for matching funds. Poage said the application would be finished before the Dec. 31 deadline for applying through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Funds to buy 26 acres for the park were approved last year and a 68-acre acquisition grant is pending with the federal government.
But if that and the new grant win approval, Poage said, there is a potential for a park of at least 194 acres.
