Lindale's Rodriguez in state finals, Legacy duo makes semis (2024)

The third time could be the charm for Lindale’s Emilio Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, appearing in his third state tennis tournament, will play for the state championship for the first time on Friday in San Antonio.

The Eagle netter won two matches on Thursday to advance to the Class 4A boys singles finals, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday at the Annemarie Tennis Center.

Rodriguez will face Malcolm Moore of Dallas Pinkston in the championship match. Rodriguez will attempt to become the first boys singles champion from Lindale.

The Lindale senior won his quarterfinals match over Armando Moreno of Burkburnett, 6-2, 6-2. He followed with his semifinal victory, a Owen Labay of Boerne, 6-3, 6-0.

The Tyler Legacy girls doubles team of Audrey Deatherage-Sophie Miller advanced to the state semifinals and finished one win short of plays for a 6A title.

Deatherage and Miller finish with a record of 49-4 this year and 71-6 over the past two years.

The Lady Raiders won their quarterfinals match over Ana Sanchez and Renee Lee of Houston Stratford, 6-0, 6-0 on Thursday at the Annemarie Tennis Center in the Alamo City.

Deatherage and Miller, the Class 6A Region II champions, then faced the team of Anwi Duduka and Dana Kardonik of Round Rock Westwood.

The Lady Warriors team won 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the championship match.

Deatherage and Miller were seeking to join the Tyler Lee girls doubles teams of Janet Kniffen-Lelia Wallender (1978) and Julie Scott-Lissa Kimmel (1991) as state girls champions.

Two years ago, Deatherage appeared at state as a singles player.

The Lindale boys doubles team of Hayden Harry and Kalvin Dryman won their 4A quarterfinals match over Abram Botello and Michael Moreau of Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The Eagle duo lost a tough three-setter (4-6, 6-4, 7-5) to Daxon Betzen and Bryson Shelton of Canyon Randall in the semifinals.
