Modesto Bee LOCAL NEWS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 2004 3 women hit by car on Street Driver, 16, is arrested; police suspect she was drunk at time of accident By DARYL FARNSWORTH BEE STAFF WRITER Three young women were injured early Saturday when a 16-year-old girl suspected of drunken driving struck them in downtown Modesto, police reported. The accident happened at 12:08 a.m. at 10th and streets, officers said. One victim, 22-year-old Sophia Vargas of Ceres, suffered head and other injuries, another victim suffered a broken leg and another had a possible broken ankle, officer Mike Hicks said. The names of the two women were not immediately available.

Both appeared to be in their early 20s, witnesses said. "I can't believe the women weren't more seriously injured or even killed," said Hicks, who saw the accident. Hicks said the teenage girl, driving a Toyota, stopped immediately after the accident. He owned and operated Areias Dairy for 54 years and was a member of Native Sons of the Golden West, DES and UPEC. He is survived by his children, Les R.

22, 2004 Otto Max Briery, 83, of Modesto died Feb. 22 at Veterans Administration Hospital, Livermore. Mr. Briery was a native of Rooks County, Kan. He had lived in Modesto since the 1970s and previously lived in Waterford, San Leandro, Santa Cruz and Colorado.

He was a truck driver for 50 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a rifleman. He was wounded in Europe in 1944 and received a Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Briery of Modesto; children, Beverly Briery of Sacramento, Tim Briery of Arizona and Linda Cain of South Lake Tahoe; stepchildren, Larry Henderson of Sonora, Laura Grubbs of Elk Grove, and Daniel Henderson and Dennis Henderson, both of Modesto; brother, Link Briery-White of Michigan City, and 32 grandchildren and 16 great -grandchildren. Mr. Carpenter was a native of Modesto and lived in La Grange 25 years. He was a lifelong cattle rancher. He was a member of the La Grange Rodeo Association, Coulterville Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a graduate of Oakdale High School. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, where he flew 27 missions as a B-17 aerial gunner over Germany.

He was given the Purple Heart. He enjoyed the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and studying the history of La Grange.
